  27. NOTE: JForth PD is distributed in 3 LHA archives named
  28.       J4TH1OF3.LHA, J4TH2OF3.LHA and J4TH3OF3.LHA.  The first 2
  29.       are necessary to install a functional JForth development
  30.       system.  The 3rd contains product documentation in
  31.       RTF format (for use with word processors that understand
  32.       that format) and is highly recommended.

  35.     JForth PD is a complete JForth software development system.  
  36. It is equivalent to the last release of the commercial JForth 
  37. Professional 3.1 package, with AmigaDOS 3.1 includes instead of 
  38. 2.04 and a few bug fixes.  In addition, a soft copy of the
  39. JForth user manual as well as a much later version of 
  40. Textra, the user-friendly text editor, is included.
  41.  
  42.     This file will explain how to install the JForth PD software 
  43. development system on your hard drive.  (The enclosed 
  44. documentation mentions running from floppies, but the 
  45. enclosed WB 3.1 include files are too large for that.  Move
  46. them to a separate floppy and reassign ji: there to run from
  47. floppies).
  48.  
  49. NOTE: Disregard the JForth Pro 3.x installation instructions in 
  50.       the documentation, as well as the Install_JForth 
  51.       installation script in the JTools drawer.  (Both are 
  52.       oriented toward installation from floppies.)  Use the 
  53.       following instructions to install this package...

  56.                     INSTALLATION OVERVIEW
  57.  
  58.     Hopefully you have already expanded the three J4TH#OF3 lha 
  59. files, because you are looking at this ReadMe.  I recommend the 
  60. lha files be extracted into the same drawer, which can be removed 
  61. after the installation.
  62.  
  63.     You will then create another drawer and extract the 5 archives 
  64. into it.  You will then perform a small edit to your s:user-startup 
  65. file and finally, reboot your Amiga.  The JForth system will be 
  66. fully functional at that point, ready for you to launch the JForth 
  67. shell (com:JForth) and compile some test programs.

  70.                DETAILED INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
  71.  
  72. 1. Create a drawer somewhere on your hard disk.  For this example, 
  73.    we'll assume the pathname of this drawer is "Work:JF"... you 
  74.    should, of course, substitute your own drawer's pathname when 
  75.    you see "Work:JF" in this example.
  76.    
  77. 2. Extract each of the 5 .lha files into Work:JF.  Each will 
  78.    create a drawer with the same name as the respective archive, 
  79.    sans the .lha extension.  When finished, Work:JF should contain 
  80.    the following drawers...
  81.    
  82.         JForth    Extras    JTools    Textra120    JFDocs

  84. 3. Add the following 2 lines to your s:user-startup script (if you 
  85.    don't have an s:user-startup file, use s:startup-sequence but 
  86.    insert it before the endcli command)...
  87.    
  88.         assign JFHD: Work:JF
  89.         execute JFHD:Extras/HD-ASSIGNS
  90.  
  91. 4. Save the file, wait 10 seconds, then reboot your Amiga.
  92.  
  93. 5. Launch JForth by one of the following methods...
  94.  
  95.    From Workbench:      double-click on Work:JF/Extras/com/JForth
  96.    From shell, enter:   run com:jforth
  97.  
  98. 6. After JForth presents it's 'ok' prompt, enter:
  99.  
  100.        include jd:load_demos
  101.  
  102. 7. When that finishes compiling, enter:
  103.    
  104.        demo
  105.  
  106. 8. To exit JForth, enter:   BYE
  107.  
  108.    ...then press RETURN

  111.                    HELPFUL INFO TO GET STARTED
  112.  
  113. Free dictionary space...
  114.  
  115. Note:  When com:JForth initially starts up, it has a free dictionary
  116.        space of about 56K.  This is enough to compile the JForth
  117.        demo, but not larger programs.  You can make this area as large
  118.        as your Amiga has memory to support.  As an example, lets
  119.        create a JForth that has 200K free dictionary space...
  120.        
  121.        1. Run the release com:JForth (see step 5 above) and enter:
  122.        
  123.             200 #K !    ( puts 200 in the 'number-K' JForth variable )
  124.             save-forth com:J200    ( creates a bigger JForth on disk )
  125.             bye                       ( exits the com:JForth program )
  126.             
  127.        2. Run the com:J200 program you just created...
  128.  
  129.           From Workbench:      double-click on Work:JF/Extras/com/J200
  130.           From shell, enter:   run com:J200
  131.           
  132.           Note that the dictionary space at startup is at least 200K.

  134. Note: You can run JForth environments from anywhere... they don't have
  135.       to reside in com:

  139. JForth logical assignments...

  141.     The 2 startup commands you added to s:user-startup, when executed, 
  142. create some logical assignments for key JForth files.  Some of these
  143. are used internally by the JForth system, others you will use as
  144. you program in JForth, for example, when specifying include files...

  146.    include ji:exec/exec.j
  147.    
  148. These  are some of the most important examples...

  150.    com: holds the released executable JForth binaries.
  151.    
  152.    ji:  holds the JForth include files (which mirror the C include files)
  153.    
  154.    ju:  holds source for many, many useful utilities
  155.    
  156.    jf:  holds most JForth source code in case you want to rebuild
  157.         com:JForth from com:JKernal
  158.         
  159.    cl:  holds source for CLONE, JForth's standalone application generator
  160.         
  161.    jd:  holds many compileable and cloneable demo source files
  162.    
  163.    jrx: holds ARexx support code
  164.    
  165.    ja:  holds the source for some small but handy applications
  166.    
  167.    jo:  holds source to ODE, JForth's object-oriented dialect
  168.    
  169.    mod: holds pre-compiled utilities such as the assembler, disassembler
  170.         which are dynamically loaded as needed

  176. How to use CLONE...
  177.  
  178. To create a cloned standalone application...
  179.  
  180. 1. Compile CLONE by entering:
  181.  
  182.        include cl:topfile
  183.  
  184. 2. Compile your application
  185.  
  186. 3. Enter the following:
  187.  
  188.        clone <main>
  189.        
  190.    ...where <main> is the name of your application's main entry point.
  191.  
  192. 4. When that finishes, enter:

  194.        save-image <main> Work:myProgram
  195.        
  196.     ...where <main> is the name of your programs main entry point.
  197.     
  198.     and 'Work:myProgram' is the path/filename of your saved application.

  200.     Note: add '-icon' to the end of the save-image command line to have
  201.           a default icon created for your program.

  203. 5. Enter 'initclone' before performing another clone operation or
  204.    performing a 'save-forth'.

  208.     JForth provides many standard Forth operators, and a wealth of 
  209. custom ones as well as many sophisticated, state-of-the-art 
  210. features.  It is strongly recommended that you read the 
  211. documentation and have it available to get the most out of JForth.  
  212. There is a LOT in JForth that you will never know about otherwise.
